A rodent is gnawing mammal which includes rats, mice, squirrels, hamsters, porcupines, and their relatives, distinguished by strong constantly growing incisors and no canine teeth.

There are many species of rodents, including squirrels, hamsters, porcupines, chipmunks, beavers, rats and mice. The types of rodents that affects Jamaica are the norway rat, the roof rat and house mice. They become pests when they infest houses, threaten public health, and destroy properties.

Annually, rodents cause significant damage to property, crops, pets and food supplies across the island. They also spread diseases, posing a serious risk to public health.  Rodent-borne diseases can be transferred directly to humans through:

• Direct contact: Bite wounds, urine or feces

• Consumption of food and/or water or breathing dust contaminated by rodent droppings and other waste products.

• Indirectly through ticks, mites, and fleas that transmit the infection to humans after feeding on infected rodents.

Signs of Rodent Infestation

• Rodent droppings around food, in drawers or cupboards, and under the sink.

• Nesting material such as shredded paper, fabric, bags or dried plant stem and leaves 

• Signs of chewing on food, packaging.

• Holes chewed through walls and floors that create entry points into the home or business.

• Stale smells coming from crawl areas.
